| Grade | Description |
|---|---|
| 1 | A contraction without movement |
| 2 | Movement with gravity eliminated (or unable to move against gravity) |
| 3 | Movement against gravity |
| 4 | Movement against gravity + resistance |
| 5 | Full strength — the examiner cannot overcome the patient without significant effort |
