The Mosby–Year Book series has been designed to survey a wide range of good journals to select articles in the field relevant to the subject of the book and to provide good abstracts that follow a readable and convenient format. The chosen articles are carefully read by 5 editors who provide authoritative and analytical commentaries that are of excellent quality.
These oncology abstracts, prepared by experienced professionals, are well written, comprehensive and provide insight into articles that can sometimes be very rambling.
The commentaries, written by the 5 well-intentioned, critical editors, provide the reader the equivalent of a personal consultation and an opportunity to better understand the value of the article and its message. Where appropriate, figures are used to illustrate particular points. For each selected article, an enhanced bibliographic citation is provided, so that the article can be further researched. At the back of the book comprehensive subject and author indices are provided for easy access to the abstracts contained within.
As is a common problem with books as opposed to journals, the information provided may be dated. Most of the articles covered in this book were published between 1994 and 1995. It seems this time lag has prevented a more serious look at novel therapeutic methods initiated in clinical trials in the last 2 years.
For the busy clinical oncologist, this year book is a good source of timely topics in capsule form in all fields of oncology.
